Diego Armando Maradona was born in Lanús, Buenos Aires, on October 30, 1960.
He is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, for many people the best ever.
"El pibe de oro" (The golden boy), as he was called, began his career in the youth teams of Argentinos Juniors, a team in which he played as a professional footballer from 1976 to 1981. In the same year he moved to Boca Juniors, where he spent the last two years of his stay in Argentina.
In 1982 he arrived in Europe, where he reached the top of his talent. After two seasons at Barcelona, with whom he won a Spanish Super Cup, he was hired by Napoli, where he became a true icon and symbol of the city.
Here Diego leads the club to the victory of two historic championships (1987 and 1990) of the Uefa Cup in 1989 and of the Italian Super Cup in 1990.
At the World Cup held in Mexico in 1986 he dragged Argentina to the final victory, scoring two goals that have gone down in football history respectively as "La mano de Dios" and "the goal of the century".
After his experience in Italy in 1991, he moved to Spain, to Sevilla, where he stayed for only one season, before returning to Argentina. Here he played a season with Newell's Old Boys, and two seasons with Boca Juniors (1992-1994).
In 1994 he retired from playing football, and the following year he was awarded the Balon D'Or for Lifetime Achievement, a prize to which he could not compete as a footballer because it was awarded only to European players.
