Description
Moet&Chandon Grand Vintage Collection 2003.
This is one of the rarest and most prestigious vintages in the Moet&Chandon house, with a longer aging on the lees, with a rich and complex aromatic profile. They are rare and collectible bottles.
Grand Vintage Collection 2003 is the perfect embodiment of the spirit of the Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Collection, a spirit founded on three essential values: freedom of interpretation, selection of the finest grapes of the year and individuality of the year.
The 2003 harvest was the culmination of an extraordinary, if somewhat troubling, growing season filled with excesses, with the most severe frost since 1957, the earliest flowering since 1971, the smallest crop since 1985, and a heat wave during the hottest summer on record. Perhaps not surprisingly, these extremes ended with the first grapes harvested on August 18, the earliest since 1822.
Blend: Meunier 43%, Pinot Noir 29%, Chardonnay 28%.
Chardonnay, the riper and healthier grape, is in the minority, while Meunier, not as ripe and more fragile at the end of the harvest, is less present than in previous years. Pinot Noir, intermediate in terms of ripeness and health, completes the blend.
Disgorgement: May 2017
Dosage: 5g/liter (extra-brut)
Aging time in cellars: 14 years
Bright golden color, still with a hint of green. On the nose, the dark, creamy and velvety maturity is obvious and omnipresent. The initial notes are of crème brulée, praline and nougatine. Upon aeration, the reductive toasted layer (coffee beans, toasted hazelnuts) gives way to warm, colorful evocations of dried fruit such as apricot, date and fig. This fruity generosity mixes with hints of tea and spices. The palate is full-bodied, voluptuous and enveloping, without any heaviness. The substance of the wine is smooth and velvety. The fruit is concentrated, reminiscent of a flambéed pineapple. After 14 years of aging in our cellars, the initial bitterness has faded, the finish has become soft but remains surprisingly fresh with notes of sap, fig and dark chocolate.
