Description

This 1959 American necklace, attributed to the HAR fashion house, represents one of the most iconic and captivating interpretations of the exotic taste that characterized costume jewelry in the late 1950s.

The approximately 50 cm long chain supports a Buddha-shaped pendant, a symbol of serenity and spirituality, rendered with that combination of irony and decorative refinement that distinguishes HAR creations. The Buddha's delicately modeled face is embellished with enamels and luminous rhinestones that enhance its features and add sparkles to the warm gilding of the metal.

The result is a visually balanced piece, combining Eastern inspiration with the theatricality typical of American design of the period. The necklace thus translates an ancient symbol into a modern, elegant fashion object brimming with personality.

The design is published in two important volumes dedicated to period costume jewelry:

  • Costume Jewelry – Judy Miller, p. 145
  • Fun Jewelry – Nancy Schiffer, p. 100
