To claim the prizes offered by the competition, collectors had to complete a collection featuring Serie A players, with the stickers available exclusively inside packs of Dolber chewing gum, and then submit the required proof to the company.

Completing the collection, however, became a real challenge. Two stickers in particular, Sergio Volpi of Bari and Paolo Poggi of Udinese, proved extremely difficult to find, giving rise to one of the most curious stories in Italian football collecting during the 1990s.

The hunt for “Volpi and Poggi” became something of a cultural phenomenon, with children and families purchasing large quantities of chewing gum in an attempt to complete their albums. The story attracted so much attention that it was featured on the well-known Italian consumer affairs television programme Mi Manda Rai Tre, which reported on complaints from frustrated consumers. The case was later even raised in the Italian Parliament through a formal parliamentary question.

Almost thirty years later, a football and a Paolo Maldini shirt originating from the prizes of that famous competition are now offered at auction, made even more special by the signatures of members of the AC Milan 1997/98 squad.

Two fascinating pieces of Rossoneri memorabilia with a highly unusual provenance, connecting the era of Paolo Maldini and AC Milan with a story that an entire generation of Italian football collectors still remembers through just two names: Volpi and Poggi.
