The 1982 Copa Libertadores represents one of the most memorable chapters in Peñarol’s history. The Uruguayan side reached the final after an outstanding campaign, overcoming prestigious opponents such as Flamengo and River Plate, winning all four matches in the semi-final group stage.
In the final, Peñarol faced Chilean side Cobreloa. After a 0–0 draw in the first leg at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, the title was decided on November 30, 1982, at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. With the match seemingly heading for a playoff, Fernando Morena scored the decisive goal in the 89th minute, securing a 1–0 victory and delivering Peñarol’s fourth Copa Libertadores title.
