Driving for Benetton Renault, Berger finished the 1997 Drivers’ World Championship in 5th place with 27 points.

The highlight of his season came at the German Grand Prix, held at Hockenheim on 27 July 1997. Berger claimed victory after starting from pole position and also set the fastest lap of the race. During the season, he also finished 2nd at the Brazilian Grand Prix and recorded two fastest laps, in Argentina and Germany.

His victory in Germany was particularly significant, as it marked Gerhard Berger’s 10th and final Formula 1 Grand Prix victory.
