Japan Women’s National Volleyball Team match shirt, worn by number 7 for a match during the 1964 Olympic Games.
The 1964 Olympic Games were held in Japan, and marked the first time in Olympic history that medals were awarded in volleyball. Women’s volleyball also became the first women’s team sport to be included in the Olympic programme.
Japan dominated the women’s volleyball tournament at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics, winning all five matches and losing just one set. Known as the “Oriental Witches,” the Japanese team claimed the gold medal, defeating the Soviet Union 3–0 in the decisive match.
The shirt shows signs of use, with stains and marks on the fabric, most likely caused by sweat absorbed during the match, which left visible marks on the shirt as it dried.
