“Dear sister, do you remember this photograph? I found it in the book of my first exam at university. A lady with a camera had come to our school, she scared me! The white people came to the village only to give us injections and we screamed like crazy turkeys […]
That lady gave me a book full of pictures that told the story of a little girl who rebelled against her parents because she didn't want to get married, but to study. That lady, putting the book in my hands, said "read it".
I read it and reread it secretly in the evening, after helping mom with the chores. It was as if a little voice that became increasingly clear was showing me the way. On the last page it was written that it was a true story and that the little girl had then become an engineer. I understood that I wanted to study too, I didn't want to have children or wash my husband's clothes. I realized that I wanted to dedicate my life to teaching and so it was. I had to move to the city, because in the village I was considered an oddity. The wind never breaks a tree that knows how to bend. No one has managed to discourage me, not even Dad's threats.
And it's not true that I don't have children, I have many, they are my students and I love them all.”
