"When they arrive at the refuge, with thirty degrees below zero, it is five in the evening; now it is night, in that season. “My jaw was frozen. I remember sleeping with seven double blankets”. Which would not have been enough to overcome the cold. In the morning, between the seventh blanket and his face, there is a layer of icicles. “It was the humidity, which had frozen on his mustache”. But in the morning there is sun, the two friends stop up there. And, the next day, it is still a storm. Moncalvo, just before ten, sees from above those five men who venture into the snow, waits for a glimmer of light, just a transverse blade that allows him to capture the moment. “People go to the mountains and if there is no sun shining, they give up taking pictures”, he says. He is not the people, and he does not give up. He is only unable to take a second shot, because the cold has blocked the curtain. But the first shot is enough, to give us the masterpiece: with those five characters, concrete and unreal, under the storm, true and magical together; which still maintain today, sixty years later, the charm of the impossible."
