Barolo has its origins in an important dynasty, that of the Marchioness Giulia Colbert Falletti who, together with her husband, the Marquis Carlo Tancredi Falletti di Barolo, experimented for the first time with the refinement of this wine in underground environments at controlled temperatures.
An intuition that even intrigued King Carlo Alberto of Savoy who, after tasting it, was so won over by it that he decided to buy a farm near Verduno, where he could produce his royal Barolo.
It is no coincidence that Barolo is still defined as “Vinum regum, rex vinorum”, or the “wine of kings, king of all wines”.
The value of Barbaresco, on the other hand, lies in a certain sense in not having aristocratic blood, but a more popular dimension linked to tradition.
We are certainly talking about a wine that has been known since ancient times (the Romans planted the first Nebbiolo vines in the Barbaresco area instead of oaks). It was only launched commercially in 1894 by Domino Gavazza, the distinguished director of the Royal School of Oenology in Alba, although there are irrefutable documents that confirm that the production of Barbaresco began even earlier: the oldest bottle labelled with the name “Barbaresco” dates back to 1870.
