Due to his remarkable unpredictability and creativity, Savicevic was nicknamed "Il Genio" ("The Genius"). He was an agile, fast, and talented playmaker, left-footed and skilled at providing assists for his teammates. He specialized in spectacular plays and dribbling, and was also very gifted athletically.
Despite possessing extraordinary class, the Montenegrin never managed to win the Ballon d'Or, although he came close in 1991, finishing second behind Jean-Pierre Papin.
