The 2000–01 UEFA Cup was the 30th edition of the competition of the same name and was won by Liverpool in the final against Alavés with the result of 5-4. For the Spanish team, it was the first European participation in the club's history. Alavés were a modest team in the Spanish Liga, without big names or international history and managed to overcome difficult rounds eliminating teams with a reputation for excellence.
