Description

Barcelona match shirt issued / worn by Rivaldo in the second group stage Champions League match against Roma, 2001/02 season.

February 26th, 2002, under the floodlights of the Stadio Olimpico, Roma gifted their fans a night to remember. A commanding 3-0 victory over Rivaldo’s Barcelona, one of the most formidable sides in Europe, during the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League’s second group stage.

It was the era of the double group stage format, a grueling test of endurance and nerve for Europe’s elite before they could even dream of the knockout rounds. And in the heart of that demanding labyrinth, Roma found their perfect night. A ruthless, glorious win against a European powerhouse, carved into club legend.

And yet, Barcelona would rise again. Led by Rivaldo, Brazilian No. 10, who could conjure brilliance with a single touch, the Catalans regrouped, topped the group, and marched on to the semifinals. But fate had a familiar twist in store. Waiting in the shadows were their eternal rivals, Real Madrid. The dream ended there, swallowed by the weight of the most defining “Clásico” of them all.

The shirt on display belongs to the private collection of Franco Baldini, Roma’s sporting director at the time, a silent witness to one of the club’s most iconic European triumphs. It may have only been prepared for Rivaldo, as some images suggest, showing him on the pitch in a short-sleeved version.

And yet, the question lingers: did he perhaps change shirts at halftime? Whatever the truth, this artifact holds a genuine fragment of that unforgettable night, a silent witness to a moment that will never come again.

This memorabilia is part of the match supply made available to players during official competitions and is different in its features in relation to the ones sold in fanshops, it could have been worn during the match and washed after the end of the match or issued for the match but then not used.
