Liverpool match shirt issued / worn by Carragher in the second group stage Champions League match against Roma, 2001/02 season.
On 5 Dicember 2001, Roma clashed against Liverpool: two clubs with different stories, united by the same hunger for glory. It was a tense, hard-fought affair. A battle where every inch of turf had to be earned with sweat and grit.
At the heart of the contest, one figure stood out: Jamie Carragher. He wasn’t wearing the captain’s armband that night, that honor belonged to Steven Gerrard, yet, as on so many other occasions, Carragher led by example. A leader without the title, but never without responsibility.
At Gerrard’s own request, Carragher had captained the Reds in key finals before, the UEFA Super Cup against CSKA Moscow, the Community Shield against Chelsea. A rock at the back. A lighthouse in the storm.
Back then, the Champions League was a gauntlet for the elite: two group stages before the knockouts even began. Liverpool made it through, reaching the quarter-finals. But it was there that dreams were dashed. Bayer Leverkusen, against the odds, overturned the first-leg deficit and marched on toward the final.
The shirt on display comes from that night in Rome. A piece of history, gifted to Roma’s then sporting director, Franco Baldini.
