Description

Real Madrid match shirt issued/worn by Sneijder in one of the two Champions League group stage matches against Juventus, 2008/09 season.

  • First Leg — September 21, 2008, Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino: Juventus 2, Real Madrid 1
  • Second Leg — November 5, 2008, Estadio Santiago Bernabéu: Real Madrid 0, Juventus 2

Sneijder was in the starting lineup for both matches. However, during those two Champions League nights, it was the opposing number 10, Alessandro Del Piero, who stole the spotlight — scoring in the first leg and delivering a famous brace at the Bernabéu, which earned him a standing ovation from the entire stadium. Real Madrid’s Champions League run ended in the Round of 16, and it was their eternal rivals, Barcelona, who eventually lifted the iconic trophy.

Having arrived at Los Blancos in the summer of 2007 from Ajax — where he had won one league title, two Dutch Cups, and three Super Cups — the new Madrid number 10 made his debut on August 25th, scoring the winning goal (2–1) in the Madrid derby against Atlético. In the second matchday, he netted a brace in a 5–0 victory over Villarreal. With 9 goals in 30 appearances, he helped secure the 2007/08 La Liga title.

However, his two seasons at Real Madrid didn’t go as expected. An injury suffered in the summer of 2008, combined with the deep squad depth, led to his transfer to Inter in 2009 — where he would go on to write football history.

This shirt is a witness to a pivotal moment in the career of a great talent — a number 10 who, in those European nights, remained in the shadow of another, but was destined to shine elsewhere, just when the world least expected it.

The shirt comes from a former Juventus staff Member.
