In the 1992/93 season, Milan’s number 10 shirt was usually worn by Ruud Gullit. But in the Champions League final against Marseille, it was Roberto Donadoni who wore that number. The choice was linked to UEFA regulations at the time, which allowed clubs to register only three foreign players for the final. Milan had four: Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten, and Jean-Pierre Papin.
Fabio Capello, Milan’s coach, faced a tough decision. Gullit, though not at his physical best, was one of the pillars of Milan’s European success. But Capello had promised Papin, a former Marseille idol, that he would play a key role in that match. In the end, Papin started on the bench but was still chosen over Gullit, who was left out of the squad entirely.
