Description

Milan match shirt issued / worn by Donadoni in the Champions League final match against Marseille played on 26/06/93 at Olympian Stadium in Baviera, 1992/93 season.

In the 1992/93 season, Milan’s number 10 shirt was usually worn by Ruud Gullit. But in the Champions League final against Marseille, it was Roberto Donadoni who wore that number. The choice was linked to UEFA regulations at the time, which allowed clubs to register only three foreign players for the final. Milan had four: Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten, and Jean-Pierre Papin.

Fabio Capello, Milan’s coach, faced a tough decision. Gullit, though not at his physical best, was one of the pillars of Milan’s European success. But Capello had promised Papin, a former Marseille idol, that he would play a key role in that match. In the end, Papin started on the bench but was still chosen over Gullit, who was left out of the squad entirely. That’s how the prestigious number 10 shirt ended up on Donadoni’s back, and with it, the weight of its responsibility in the most important match of the season.

Milan arrived in Munich as the clear favorite, having scored 23 goals and conceded just one in the competition. But football is a game of fine margins, and that night, it was Marseille who came out on top: 1–0, with a goal from Boli, and the Champions League trophy heading to France.

For Milan, it was a bitter night despite the expectations. For Donadoni, it was a rare and symbolic moment — wearing the number 10 shirt on the biggest stage of all.

Donadoni has signed the shirt on the back.
