After an early lead by the French, thanks to a cheeky “Panenka” penalty by Zidane, the Azzurri equalized with a powerful header from Materazzi. The match continued with incredible intensity—hitting the woodwork, dramatic saves, and rising tension—culminating in Zidane’s shocking red card in extra time for headbutting Materazzi. The game was ultimately decided by penalty kicks: Italy was flawless, while Trezeguet hit the crossbar.
