Islam Makhachev, born in Makhachkala in 1991, is a Russian mixed martial artist of Lezgin ethnicity. He competes in the UFC lightweight division and has been trained by former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. He made his UFC debut in 2015 with a win over Leo Kuntz, before suffering his first career loss to Adriano Martins. After a brief suspension, later overturned by USADA, he resumed his career and went on a long winning streak.
Between 2018 and 2021, he defeated high-level opponents such as Tibau, Johnson, Dober, Moises, and Hooker, securing victories by submissions and knockouts. In 2022, he defeated Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 to capture the UFC lightweight title.
In 2023, he successfully defended his belt twice against Alexander Volkanovski, first by decision and then with a first-round knockout. In 2024, he retained the title by submitting Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.
Finally, in January 2025, he defeated Renato Moicano at UFC 311, marking his fourth consecutive title defense, a record in UFC lightweight history.
