Giovanni Gastel was born in Milan, passionate about theater and poetry. His career as a photographer began in a basement in Milan in the late 1970s, where the young Gastel spent his apprenticeship taking photographs and learning the basic techniques of a craft that would later lead to his success.

He is known for his collaborations with major fashion houses—Ferragamo, Missoni, Versace, Dior, and many others—and for his portraits of famous figures, including Barack Obama, Ettore Sottsass, Catherine Deneuve, and Roberto Bolle.

His unmistakable photographic style combines equal parts irony and poetry.
