Despite an inconsistent league campaign that ended with sixth place, Inter found glory in Europe. In the UEFA Cup, the Nerazzurri reached the semifinals, driven also by the goals of the German ace.

His name remains tied to memorable matches, such as the brace against St. Gallen and the decisive goal against Nantes in the quarterfinals.

The team, initially led by Ilario Castagner and later by Mario Corso, was seeking new energy, finding in Rummenigge an indispensable cornerstone.
