Alex Israel

Alex Israel (b. 1982, Los Angeles) is an American contemporary artist whose work is deeply rooted in the visual culture of his native city. Hollywood, cinema, advertising, pop culture and the Californian landscape all feed into his distinctive and instantly recognisable visual language. Working across painting, sculpture, film, installation and new media, Israel often draws on the techniques, materials and aesthetics of the film industry. Among his best-known works are the Self-Portraits, featuring the artist’s profile in sunglasses, and the Sky Backdrops, large-scale, softly graduated skies inspired by the sunsets of Los Angeles.

With a bright, polished and deliberately artificial aesthetic, Israel explores the relationship between art, celebrity, identity and image-making. His work also considers how cinema, social media and entertainment culture shape the way we see and experience reality.

In Israel’s work, Los Angeles becomes more than a place: it is both a backdrop and a symbol of contemporary culture, where reality, spectacle and collective imagination continually blur into one another.
